A few of Jenny's quilts
Underground Railroad Quilt From the book by Eleanor Burns. This is currently my favorite wallhanging that I've made. The blocks are only 6 inches each. This was the first time I had made blocks so small and I never realized what a difference that makes! I had never been big on squaring up my blocks or pieces of blocks before this quilt but, let me tell you, trimming the individual components is absolutely ESSENTIAL when you are working with small blocks. Once I got the hang of doing the little blocks I put the quilt together fairly quickly. And then, despite my lack of patience, I had to hand quilt it because the machine just didn't suit the style. I added an Ohio star as the 16th block even though that's not in the Burns book because I'm originally from Ohio and because Ohio was a big station on the underground railroad.
Paper-pieced Cow Quilt After teaching a class in paper-piecing one of my students brought me a pattern for a cow that looked very much like this quilt, but in different colors. She wanted to make the quilt but only knew how to paper-piece and the directions used templates. She wanted to know if there was any possible way to paper-piece the cow so I took the pattern home and made a paper-pieced draft of it. I added the scrappy border because, well, I love scrappy looks on pretty much everything I do. That lets me squeeze in more fabrics!
Purple and Aqua Bed Quilt (with May) This quilt ended up being HUGE. It covers the bed and then some. Mostly I just wanted to use the colors which are my favorites when they are together. It also gave me a chance to use all sorts of purples and aquas from my stash. And since it's basically just a simple nine patch it went together very quickly. It's all rumpled in this picture because, of course, I couldn't actually make the bed while May and her sisters were sleeping on it. Everyone knows that you can't make the cats move off the bed! |
